Internal medicine is the medical speciality dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Internists are equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings — no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex. They are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems and can handle severe chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time.
They also bring to patients an understanding of wellness (disease prevention and the promotion of health), women’s health, substance abuse, mental health, as well as effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system and reproductive organs.

The cardiology department at Harley’s International Medical Clinic is equipped to deal with all conditions related to the heart, in both preventative and therapeutic aspects.  It is housed in a custom-built unit with all the diagnostic equipment under one roof. Based on the client’s needs, the following investigations are regularly done:

Diagnostic Tests

Electrocardiogram (ECG) – recording of the electrical waves from the heart to assess the heart rate, rhythm, heart wall thickness and chamber enlargement as well as for early detection of heart attacks.

Preventative Cardiology

Risk factor profiling is done for all patients attending the department. Early detection and treatment of risk factors for heart attacks is the only method of reducing the incidence of death and disability due to heart attack in the community.

Our lipid profile examining facility estimates directly all sub fractions of cholesterol and ApoA1 and ApoB, the carrier proteins for cholesterol. Similarly the serum homocysteine, one of the early correctable risk factors for heart attack and stroke, can be detected.

Antenatal Care

Antenatal care is medical attention given to the expectant mother and her developing baby. Good antenatal care also involves the mother caring for herself by following her doctor’s advice, practising good nutrition, getting plenty of rest, exercising sensibly and avoiding things that could harm her baby. Getting good antenatal care is the most important part of pregnancy.

Minimally Invasive Gynaecology

As technology progresses, the world – and everything we use – is getting smaller. Gynaecological surgery is no different.

The world of women’s healthcare is heavily in favour of replacing traditional surgical techniques with minimally-invasive gynaecology (MIG). This includes procedures and surgeries which utilise any form of camera (scope) to evaluate or treat a gynaecological condition. While some of the MIG techniques are performed in the clinic setting, others may require anaesthesia.

We tend to worry when a doctor mentions “surgery” of any kind. However, with minimally invasive techniques, many fears can be allayed. MIG procedures require greater surgical experience and proficiency, but allow for quicker patient recovery. Patients may go home on the same day or the day after surgery, even if that surgery is a hysterectomy. Generally, our patients are able to eat and walk within two to four hours after surgery and often resume their daily activities (including work) within a week of surgery.

Sequence of Orthodontic Treatment:

The key to success in Orthodontic treatment is a thorough and accurate diagnosis. An accurate diagnosis depends on clinical evaluation, taking dental and Medical history and the use of high quality pre-treatment records.

  1. Initial Visit and Examination: It gives your orthodontist the chance to make a preliminary clinical evaluation, listen to patient concerns and recommend if and when treatment is necessary. Your first visit to the orthodontist is your opportunity to get your questions answered and discuss your concerns.
  2. Diagnostic Evaluation: Following diagnostic records are taken in this visit:
    1. Medical/Dental History
    2. X-rays of your teeth and Jaws Lateral Cephalogram radiograph, panoramic radiograph and complete intraoral radiographs are advised. X-rays are taken to look at the root structure of the teeth and how the jaw bones and teeth relate to each other. At times additional imaging of the temporomandibular joints and 3D radiographs are helpful.
    3. Impressions from which models of your teeth are made. These “molds” are used to develop models for closer examination of the teeth and how the upper and lower teeth relate to each other. A wax bite registration is taken to relate the upper and lower models.
    4. Facial and Intra-oral Photographs – Photographs of your face, teeth and smile are taken. Typically facial photographs and intra-oral photographs are taken to evaluate facial proportions, facial aesthetics and the health of the teeth and gums. These diagnostic records collectively enable the orthodontist to develop an appropriate treatment plan for the patient.
  3. Treatment Conference: The last step before beginning treatment is an appointment to discuss your treatment plan in detail. Your orthodontist will show you what’s involved in the treatment. What results can be expected and how your active participation can help assure success. Estimated treatment time and fees will also be discussed.
  4. Separators: Sometimes, if your teeth are very close together, the Orthodontist may need to create space between your teeth so that braces/ bands will fit. This may require placing separators a week before bands are scheduled to be cemented to the teeth. Do not floss the areas where separators are placed. At the next visit the orthodontist will place the braces.
  5. Periodic Visits: Regularly scheduled appointments are an important part of any orthodontic treatment. Generally your orthodontist will want to see you every 4-8 weeks to check your progress and make adjustments to your braces. Keeping regularly scheduled Orthodontic appointments, maintaining proper oral hygiene, keeping a healthy diet, avoiding certain foods and following the orthodontist’s instructions can reduce the treatment time and increases the chances of an optimal outcome to your orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontic treatment is a team approach that involves you, your orthodontist and your dentist.
  6. Retention: Just because your braces have been removed does not mean your orthodontic treatment is finished. You still have one more important step to complete: retention. Your retainers are designed to settle your teeth in their corrected position until your bones, gums and muscles adapt to the change. The final treatment stage is the finishing touch and will help ensure improved oral health and a beautiful smile.

Homeopathy

Positive homeopathy aims at stimulating the human body’s defence system. The body’s defence mechanisms and processes in turn prevent or treat an illness. The therapy involves small doses of substances that would help produce isolated symptoms of the said condition. This would enable the immune system to adapt and oppose the diagnosed condition.

It is a healthier way to overcome ailments because it strengthens the body’s own ability to fight diseases. The homeopathy medicine course is tailor-made for each individual. It addresses particular issues rather than their generic nature. So, a plan is devised, not based merely on symptoms, like other branches of medicine. Considerations like lifestyle, mental status and emotional balance also feature in the treatment chosen.

While other forms of medicine aid in controlling symptoms, homeopathic remedies help restoration of health. The therapy not only aims at controlling the condition, it also aims at ensuring that it doesn’t relapse. In fact, there are certain conditions that can only be treated using homeopathy, without the fear of homeopathy side effects.
