Understanding diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that affects the way your body uses blood sugar. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes happens when your pancreas doesn’t make insulin. Type 2 diabetes happens when your body doesn’t make or use insulin well. Diabetes can also happen in pregnant women, called gestational diabetes. If not managed well, all types of diabetes can lead to serious health problems such as diabetic ketoacidosis, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation. The good news is that Diabetes can be prevented, and its complications can be reduced with early detection and treatment. Education is an essential part of managing diabetes, as it helps people to understand the disease and how to best manage it. Diabetes education programs can provide people with the skills and knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health. In addition, Diabetes educators can provide support and guidance in making lifestyle changes that can improve blood sugar control and overall health. With proper education and support, people with diabetes can lead healthy, active lives.

Diabetes Prevention

 – Programs proven to help prevent type 2 diabetes in those at high risk.

The prevention and education go hand in hand. We strive towards making our patients aware of the possibility of developing Type 2 diabetes. It is unavoidable for those with a stressful lifestyle, poor eating habits and predisposition to the disease.

Our prevention programs focus on individual and group education to patients. Maintaining a healthy weight and at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week is our target goals for the patients.
We also offer Osteoporosis screening and bone screening using a FibroScan, which screens the fat deposition in the liver. Regular blood sugar screening and understanding other signs of being pre-diabetes also adds to the prevention program.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that affects the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye, a leading cause of loss of vision. Diabetic retinopathy often has no early warning signs. That is why regular comprehensive dilated eye exams are essential for people with diabetes. The earlier it is detected, the more likely it is that vision can be preserved.

Retina Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) is a technique that allows to check the circulation of blood in the retina. At Harley International Medical Clinic, we offer this test to diagnose any retina related disease correlating to Diabetes.

Careful control of your blood sugar level can minimize damage to your eyes and reduce your risk of blindness. Our ophthalmologist at Harley International Medical Clinic may recommend more frequent exams.
